We are honored and proud to present the 2019 Butler Award to Federal Reserve Board Governor Lael Brainard in recognition of her significant contributions to the economic profession through her research and policy making. Dr. Brainard has a long track record of improving the understanding, and navigating the realities of international economic linkages and their implications for workers, firms, financial markets and economic policy. She has served as a member of the Fed's Board of Governors since 2014 where she serves as Chair of the Committee on Financial Stability; Committee on Federal Reserve Bank Affairs; Committee on Federal Reserve Board Affairs; and Committee on Payments, Clearing, and Settlement. She also Chair’s Working Party 3 of the OECD. Prior to her tenure at the Fed Dr. Brainard served as Undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Treasury and Counselor to the Secretary of the Treasury in the Obama Administration where her responsibilities included navigating the euro area crises and currency relations with China. She was a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution from 2001 to 2009 and Vice President and Director of the Global Economy and Development Program from 2006 to 2009 Dr. Brainard also served as Deputy National Economic Adviser in the Clinton Administration, worked at McKinsey & Company and began her career as a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Her academic research examined the relationships between offshore production, trade, and jobs, the measurement of structural and cyclical unemployment, and strategic trade policy.
