President's Letter

To the members of the New York Association for Business Economics (NYABE) and past attendees at our events:

On behalf of the leadership of NYABE, I'd like to share with you a preview of upcoming events and extend our warm welcome for you to attend.

Our schedule kicks off this year as always with the presentation of our annual William F. Butler Award. On October 2, the Butler Award will be bestowed on Robert Shiller, Arthur M. Okun Professor of Economics at Yale University. Professor Shiller is one of the leading researchers in the economics of housing and financial markets, and he will be speaking on both topics at the Butler Award presentation, including a paper he presented in September at the Brookings Panel on Economic Activity. There is still time to sign up for this event.

On October 29, we will welcome Professor Glenn Hubbard, Dean and Russell L. Carson Professor of Finance and Economics at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business. In addition to his prolific academic career, Professor Hubbard is an advisor to Governor Mitt Romney. We have invited President Obama’s campaign to provide a speaker to engage in a policy debate, and are still waiting to hear from them. Whether the format turns out be a debate or a presentation by Professor Hubbard, I am sure this will be a very interesting event.

On November 27, we have the pleasure of hosting John Murray, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada. This will be a terrific opportunity to hear from a key economic policy maker.

We plan to have a full slate of presentations in 2013, and will let you know as these are scheduled.

On behalf of the NYABE leadership, I want to extend our special thanks to Andrew Tilton for his service as President last year. We also extend our thanks to Catherine Swahn and the Canadian Consulate, and to Samantha Ng and Maurine Haver of Haver Analytics, for providing their time and facilities in support of NYABE.

Please speak about our great schedule with friends and colleagues who might be interested in taking part in our events (and we encourage those of you who are not members to join NYABE by filling out this form). Existing members may also renew their membership and pay their dues using this form. We are offering discounted rates on 2- and 3-year memberships at $150 and $200, respectively -- at these rates you only need to attend five events in two years (or seven events in three years) to "break even" on your membership!
